The Rebirth of The Shelborne South Beach | New Chapter in Miami Beach History

Posted: Jan. 18th, 2012  |  By JustLuxe Team
The new Shelborne South Beach Hotel is open after a 20 million dollar make over. A dramatic new entrance features an Art Deco Porte Cochere that recreates the rings of light on the overhang that previously greeted guests 70 years ago updated with pulsating LED lights that change color. It also sets the stage for your grand entrance or for locals who want to show off their latest sports car. A grand new deco lobby welcomes guests and features several cozy seating areas to relax and enjoy a book from the hotel's extensive lobby library featuring books from Taschen Books.

Local man about town, Keith Menin, the 31 year old owner has transformed this famous Art Deco landmark into South Beach's ultimate modern playground and premiere hotel destination for generation X and Y for any length of stay. There is a swanky lobby cocktail lounge where locals can flirt with guests, three unique restaurant choices that will appeal to all palates and all feature vegan options - Tanka Sushi, Vesper Cafe and Pool side Cafe and Lucy's Cantina Royale Beach Front Pool Bar and Taqueria. There is also a chic curated modern general store called GuyandGirl in the lobby where you can pick up a new swimsuit or some organic snacks. And the original celebrity magnet basement karaoke Lounge " Studio" has been left untouched in all its grunge glamour glory. Completely self sufficient you will never have to leave the Shelborne South Beach.

The Shelborne is located directly on the beach in prime South Beach at 1801 Collins Avenue with next door neighbors The Raleigh Hotel and The Shore Club. The new Shelborne South Beach will feature 150 completely brand new hotel rooms, 20 exquisitely detailed suites, nine executive poolside bi-level townhouse suites, multiple mezzanine lanai suites and a sprawling Penthouse Suite. The hotel's former ballroom and home to the Miss USA Pageant in the 1940s is now a flexible 5,000sq feet meeting and events space is decked out with state of the art technology, including a sound system by renowned sound guru Steve Dash.

Mr Dash is also responsible for the entire hotel sound system and Keith Menin personally selects the playlists. There is also an adjacent 3,535 sq feet outdoor deck with stunning ocean views that can be rented separately.

The New Rooms: Inspired by the soothing beach location and South Beach fashion the new guest rooms are not only incredibly functional and modern, they are also playful with a soothing palate of gray and off-white with flowing white sheer drapes. All rooms feature modern mini bar stocked with organic treats and a hidden plasma TV behind a two-way mirror. Gorgeous all white marble spa like bath rooms are stocked with custom organic large size soaps, shampoos form Menin Hotel's own GuyandGirl product line.

The New Pool: A huge new heated infinity pool is the heart of the new Shelborne and is lined with 10 of South Beach's most tricked out cabanas available for day rentals and feature bathrooms with showers, Plasma TV's and full room service. The original diving board has been preserved and converted into a fountain and the pool is surrounded by the original towering palm trees. A new extended shallow end is perfect for just getting your feet wet and there is also a hot tub spa to relax in between dips in the pool. Every playground must have a great lawn and the new upper Shelborne pool deck features a sprawling lush soft faux lawn that is set aside for topless sunbathing and features a large sculpture/communal shower.

This new deck and lawn is accessed via a deco style bubble stair case and cat walk that was actually part of the original design for the pool area. The entire pool area features ambient orange guide lighting inspired by the sunsets on the ocean that clicks on at sunset. Located directly on the beach the new Shelborne South Beach is the first ocean front hotel in South Beach to completely open and clear the space between the pool and the beach creating stunning unobstructed views and locals walk up access to Lucy's Cantina Royale. This was common with all the beachfront hotels in South Beach back in the 1940s and it was only in the last 10 years that beachfront hotels created large hedges and fences behind their pools.

The Man behind the Shelborne: Keith Menin Keith Menin comes full circle with the rebirth of the Shelborne Hotel that has been a part of family for over 40 years and who at 15 worked at the the front desk and as a bell hop to become its visionary owner in 2012. Today Keith is now 31 years old and he is regularly listed on all the local best dressed lists and his impeccable personal sense of style is a natural gift that he uses regularly to give his hotels a fresh new fashionable style that reflect his larger than life personality.
