Hotel News: For the first time since year-ending 2007, the average hotel room rate increased according to the Summer 2010 Hotel Price Index released by Hotels.com. The company, which is among the largest providers of lodging worldwide, is reporting an average increase of two percent overall. However, the rates of four- and five-star hotels popular among world travelers are markedly lower than rates would be at the peak of the market.
"Although average hotel prices increased globally, there are many great deals to be found at luxury hotels," said Victor Owens, VP of marketing, North America for Hotels.com. "Travelers don't need to compromise quality for value, even in popular international destinations like Dubai and Moscow, where four-star hotel prices dropped an average of six percent."
Chile's Santiago had the most significant change reported over a one-year period with the average room rate of four-star hotels dropping 25 percent to $213 per night from $284 per night. While Santiago showed the largest change, the minimum drop in four-star hotels nightly room rates was seen in Dubai and Moscow at only six percent. San Francisco and Orlando showed the most significant change during the period in the U.S. at a13 percent decline.
Here is a list of cites where nightly rates of top-tier hotels fell the most from Hotels.com HPI guide "Luxury for Less" section.
